ISEO HOUSE
Iseo House study was commissioned by a young Italian couple to Mezzo Atelier, with the purpose of understanding the potential and possibilities of making a refurbishment in an old free standing house on sale.
Located in the country side of Bergamo region, the house is surrounded by woods and an olive grove. Several extensions and changes where made to the house over time, mischaracterizing the main volume, and the result was a disproportioned building, with dark interiors and little functionality.
The first and main exercise was to subtract the house’s redundant areas and finishes, and then create new openings, relating the new internal spaces with the beautiful gardens around it.
A partially open winter garden, inspired in old green houses, was designed in continuity with the west façade and the social area, giving the possibility to have stronger contact with the outdoors in every season. The existing fireplace was redefined to be open towards this space, so it could be used from inside and outside. The addition was designed so it could be realized in phases, according to the owners needs.
The facades where unified and simplified with a new coat of beije plastering, allowing the reading of the different material’s textures beneath it.
Project: Study for a private house
Typology: Residential
Year: 2020
Location: Iseo, Bergamo, Italy
Team: Joana de Oliveira, Giacomo Mezzadri, Sabrina Sinelli, Nuno Simas
