Pico Houses

São Roque do Pico, Azores

The office was commissioned a project to design two vacation houses in a land by the sea in Pico Island. The property, divided by typical basalt stone walls, had an old house, which had been recently remodelled. The land’s division had created organic “pockets” at different levels, organising areas for orange trees or vineyards. The northern areas, offering views to the ocean and the neighbour island of São Jorge; and also allowing the main house to keep its privacy, were the most interesting sites to work.

The new volumes appear anchored to the internal dividing walls of the farms, with a contiguous facade and developing the program for the interior of each “pocket”, always keeping the mandatory distance from the peripheral walls. The new constructions show a relationship with the island’s vernacular construction, highlighting the basalt stone, the strong contrast with the white masonry surfaces and the sloping roofs in regional tile. However, tradition is allied to contemporary solutions that allow for both a holistic and a functional experience; fresh, bright interiors and greater durability.
