Two holiday houses
Mezzo Atelier has completed a project on the northern coast of São Miguel Island, refurbishing two derelict houses and transforming them into comfortable holiday homes: a studio and a two-bedroom house.
Nestled between lush green cliffs and an expansive ocean view, the houses are completely secluded, accessible only by a narrow trail, offering guests an immersive experience in nature. With a strong vernacular character, the project respects the original volumes and traditional materials while introducing a contemporary layer of design and functionality.
Small, carefully integrated extensions were added to accommodate a bathroom in the studio and a kitchen in the two-story house. Warm wooden floors and ceilings create a comfortable environment, while contemporary materials like colored cement and plywood add a raw aesthetic to the spaces. A key focus was given to natural light and the creation of contemplative moments within the different rooms. Both houses were enhanced with steel and wooden porches, seamlessly extending the living areas into the surrounding landscape.
Project: Two holiday houses
Typology: Residential
Year: 2023 / present
Location: São Miguel Island
Surface: 112,72 m2
Team: Joana de Oliveira, Giacomo Mezzadri, Sabrina Sinelli
Renders: Mezzo Atelier
